Dating Through The Decades
2020

Dating Through the Decades is a collection of three interactive illustrations made using p5.js, depicting how asking someone on a first date has changed throughout the years. Starting in the 1950s, men did the asking out, and it was typically done in person. There was much more in person interaction, which made the conversation more intimate, and more people dated with a purpose. In the 1990s, cell phones were becoming more popular. The cell phone made dating more accessible, especially with the introduction of text messaging, which made it easier to get a hold of someone quickly once they provided you with their number. Now, in 2020, dating apps like Tinder, Bumble, and Hinge completely rule the dating world and there is limited person to person interaction needed ahead of time. Asking and rejecting is quicker and easier than ever—for better or worse.
